The British empire was so vast, they controlled land in all of the continents except South America and Antarctica. The empire also lasted a very long time. The empire still had control of land on another continent in 1997 when England gave Hong Kong to China.

By 1921, the British Empire included between 470 and 570 million people, almost 1/4 of the entire population. The land controlled by one tiny homeland was over 14 million square miles.

Almost everyone knows that "The empire on which the sun never sets" refers to the British Empire, but few know why. The reason behind this nickname is that the sun will always be shining on at least one part of the empire's span.
